Defunct Ranks
This page details ranks which are no longer in use on Project City Build services.
For information on current server ranks, visit the List of Ranks page.
Player ranks
The following ranks were ones not considered to be staff-level. They have been separated into dormant ranks (ones in which the infrastructure for promoting to the players still exists, but is not in use) and removed ranks (ones which are entirely out of use).
Dormant
Intern
■ Intern was a rank given to players who applied for Builder unsuccessfully under the modern builder rank system. Intern was purely cosmetic and had no permissions differences from the Member rank. While the means to promote players to Intern still exists, the Architects Council has slowly phased the rank out in practice, instead leaving unsuccessful applicants at Member. The in-game prefix for Intern is [I].
Trusted+
■ Trusted+ was a rank given to longtime Trusted-rank players who demonstrated outstanding passion for the Project City Build community. Like Trusted, candidates for Trusted+ were nominated and voted on by the staff team, albeit which much more scrutiny. Trusted+ players received all permissions of both the Trusted and Donator ranks as well as invitations to test new server features and assist in staff-led server projects.
The primary perk associated with Trusted+ though was the ability to apply for WorldEdit access. In order to receive W/E, Trusted+ players were required to complete an in-game test facilitated by a staff member. Trusted+ was announced on 14 January 2019 with its first recipients (insane_monkey, thejoshua79, A_Good_Shrimp, and FurtenFur) being announced one week later. The rank was obsoleted by the introduction of the modern builder rank system, announced 29 June 2021. Some players still retain their Trusted+ ranks on Discord and in-game[?], but due to the obsolescence, there are no intentions of making new promotions. The in-game prefixes for Trusted+ were [Trusted+] and now [T+].

Guide
■ Guide was a rank meant to serve as a transition between player and staff member. It was introduced on 26 March 2016. Unlike all other by-nomination ranks, candidates for Guide were nominated exclusively by the community and voted on by everyone. Batches of three guides were promoted in three-month cycles, with four of these cycles occurring over the rank's lifetime.
Guides were granted permission to convenience commands like /checkban, /seen, and /jail. Guides were intended to alleviate some of the duties of Moderator, but this ended up causing confusion about the boundaries of responsibility between the two ranks. On 17 March 2017, dissolution of the Guide program was officially announced, and the last batch of Guides were left to complete their terms. The rank was removed on 3 April 2017. The majority of Guides eventually joined the staff team. The in-game prefixes for Guide were [Guide] and [G}.
| Batch | Term | Guide 1 | Guide 2 | Guide 3 |
| 01 | 26 March 2016 to 01 July 2016 | jmvvana | The_Jacob | whbilbo* |
| 02 | 01 July 2016 to 03 October 2016 | AlphaMD | EstevaoBuilder | Vexnorz |
| 03 | 03 October 2016 to 03 January 2017 | hywel | Katycat_ | Poctivy_Ani |
| 04 | 03 January 2017 to 03 April 2017 | Furten_Fur | mount2010 |
Vexnorz |
*whbilbo served as a Guide for an additional month during the second batch while Vexnorz was unable to play actively.
Staff ranks
On 09 May 2022, the longstanding Project City Build staff rank hierarchy was overhauled during a "spring cleaning" that also saw the closure of the Discourse forum site. Initially, the staff team was divided into the Moderator and Developer ranks. While neither rank was "higher than" the other in the new hierarchy, the ranks effectively represented the roles of the former Operator and Administrator ranks, respectively.
On 09 May 2023, the staff team structure was once again refined. The distinction between Staff and Administrator was reimplemented and the Moderator and Developer roles were converted to staff subteams (Moderation and Technical, respectively). Two other staff subteams, Events and Marketing, were also created. Though the Moderation subteam has since been dissolved, this system has remained the current staff model up to now.
Main staff
Moderator
■ Moderator was the first obtainable staff rank, received after applying for and being accepted to the staff team. In its first iteration, Moderator existed as a trial and training period where staff members were introduced to basic moderation tools. Moderators were responsible for looking after the server day-to-day and assisting players with basic needs. Once a Moderator had demonstrated a solid understanding of their duties, and no less than one month after their initial promotion, the Moderator could be nominated by a higher-ranking staff member for promotion to Operator.
After the restructure in 2022, Moderator became a more permanent rank, stripped of its trial connotations, though the responsibilities remained roughly the same, including some duties of Operators. The in-game prefixes for Moderator were [Mod] and [M].
Operator
■ Operator was the rank given to staff members who dealt with broader operational functions of the server. Operators were expected to deal quickly with most situations that happen in-game. Operators earned the responsibilities to review applications for Moderator, set warps for cities, and manage server projects and events. The in-game prefixes for Operator were [OP] and [O].
Senior Operator
■ Senior Operator was the highest staff rank obtained under normal circumstances. Senior Operators were the most experienced and trusted staff members within the community. Senior Operators had access to almost all server commands and dealt with managerial functions of the server. Senior Operators authorized and oversaw server projects, wrote and revised server rules, managed the staff team, and resolved bigger issues both in-game and in the community. The prefixes for Senior Operator were [SOP] and [S].
Developer
■ Developer was the other rank, besides Moderator, resulting from the 2022 restructure. Developers primarily worked on technical aspects of the server like plugin writing and backend maintenance, though some Developers served in functions more akin to creative direction or project management.
Staff-adjacent
The following ranks were non-staff ranks held exclusively by former staff members.
Retired
■ Retired was the rank given to staff members who became inactive or resigned but remained on good terms with the team. Retired players had the same permissions as the Trusted rank, though they were allowed to retain WorldEdit permissions if they had them while actively serving on the staff team. Retired players could be reinstated to their previous staff rank if they demonstrated regular activity and expressed interest in contributing to the server again. The in-game prefixes for Retired were [Retired] or [R].
Ancillary
■ Ancillary staff membership was a distinction that only existed internally and on the Discord server[?]. Ancillary staff members were typically former staff members who held the Trusted rank on the main server but had a managerial role on a different service, such as Terraria or the Feed The Beast server.
Classic server ranks
Ranks on the Project City Build Classic server were similar to the modern builder rank system; they were earned based on building skill and project commitment. In addition to the ranks listed below, the Classic server also had the Guest, Operator, Senior Operator, and Administrator ranks, each of which functioned similarly to their already-detailed counterparts and are thus omitted.
Initiate
■ Initiate was the first building rank granted to players after Guest. To receive Initiate, players were only required to complete one simple build—a house, a sculpture, a work of pixel art—in the guestcity world. The rank was meant to serve as a layer of protection from griefing, much the same way that Member functions today.
Builder
■ Builder was the second building rank granted to players with reasonable building skill. To receive Builder, players were required to complete two or more builds that showed improvement from Initiate. Builders were expected to understand very basic building principles like scale and detail as they were understood in the Classic era. Builders were given access to and encouraged to build in the buildercity world. In limited special cases, Builders were able to appeal for a personal world.
AdvBuilder
■ AdvBuilder was the third building rank granted to players with substantial building skill and a greater sense of aesthetics. To receive AdvBuilder, players were required to complete four or more builds that were larger or more detailed than those made for the Builder rank. Promotion to AdvBuilder required the approval of two different staff members. AdvBuilders were given access to and encouraged to build in the advcity world as well as Classic's Big City. AdvBuilders were also given a personal 256x256-block world to build in. Once this map was filled, AdvBuilders were able to request a new one.
ProBuilder
■ ProBuilder was the fourth and final building rank granted to players who had demonstrated the greatest level of building skill on the server. There was no set amount of completed builds required for promotion to ProBuilder, but builds were expected to be grand and demonstrate a "wow factor". Promotion to ProBuilder required the approval of three different staff members. ProBuilders were given up to three personal worlds to build in at a time. Once one of these maps was filled, ProBuilders were able to request a new one.
TraineeOP
■ TraineeOP was the first staff rank on the Classic server. Like the main-server Moderator rank, it served as a trial period to introduce players to a staff role and determine whether they were fit to continue on the team.
